Working With Orphans, Malawi

Volunteers working at the orphanages involved in the program will be helping children who have in the majority of cases lost their parents to HIV and Aids. Others were abandoned soon after birth or were picked up on the streets where they had been left to fend for themselves.

Volunteers in Malawi in children’s homes assist with a variety of tasks dedicated to caring for the orphans who are up to 14 years of age. These include helping with food preparation, cleaning and maintenance, in addition to playing with the children, helping with homework and getting them ready for school.

The volunteer programs also encompass working in homes for children with special needs. Here again the ages range from birth to fourteen. Volunteers in Malawi take care of babies, which involves feeding, bathing, dressing and changing nappies. Volunteers in Malawi also participate in play, in taking children for walks and in helping with their physiotherapy.

The experience of helping vulnerable children, while it can be emotionally difficult, is a positive and life-changing one. For their part, the children benefit from the support and love which they receive from the volunteers in Malawi.
