Work in a wildlife rescue sanctuary in Zimbabwe
If you love animals and want to get your hands dirty working with African wildlife, this programme offers a personal approach to hard-working volunteers. With animals ranging from lions, leopards and hyenas to monkeys, reptiles and birds, this sanctuary has been helping orphaned, injured and rescued wildlife for over 40 years.
The sanctuary also acts as an educational and research centre, with outreach programmes to help educate local communities on environmental issues and how to protects their wildlife. Release programmes reintroduce as many animals as possible back into the wild and, where that isn’t possible, they carry out breeding programmes and research. As a family-run not-for profit, the sanctuary relies heavily of the assistance of volunteers and there is always a great deal of work to carry out. Volunteers are welcomed as part of the family and are always surprised by how many animals they get to work with during their placement.
What to Expect?
The sanctuary is based 20minutes outside of the city of Bulawayo - Zimbabwe’s second city. The Wilson family have been running the centre for over 40 years and are famous in the field of wildlife research. Volunteers live on-site in comfortable en-suite huts and eat their meals with the family.
Volunteers work 6 days a week and take trips and excursions on their days off. At the centre, you will get involved with a wide range of activities including; - feeding and preparing food - cleaning enclosures and constructing environments that enhance behaviours for individual species - tend to injured, orphaned or sick animals in the infirmary - assist with educational outreach programmes in schools - assisting in research work, including monitoring and logging behaviours - when releases occur, help with relocation and tracking
