In this 1-day program, you will be visiting a primary school in east Africa’s largest slum, Kibera. Kibera is found in the centre of Nairobi and is home to half a million people. Here you can become involved helping cook lunch for the children, in assisting with our health checks and in reading to children whose everyday survival is a challenge.
Our Feeding Projects, for instance, are crucial to ensure that children in particular have their nutritional needs met. The outcomes we strive for are children who are healthy, who have good concentration levels and who are more resistant to childhood illnesses. Our work in this area is central to every other outcome that we can achieve.
We spend 100% of your volunteer fees implementing our projects which includes expenditure such as feeding programs, clean water provision, education and school euipment and housing, etc.
Come and see how your contributions are making a real difference to people’s lives. We couldn’t feed children and help people have a brighter future without your support. Come and see for yourself and become part of the One Horizon family.
What to Expect?
You'll begin the day with a briefing by the school's founder and an introduction to the teachers you'll be working with side-by-side. Throughout the day, you'll be involved in a range of activities from health checks, cooking lunch, feeding toddlers and babies, classroom teaching and games.
One Horizon Kenya’s staff embodies the essence and spirit of Kenya. They are people who seize opportunities, who work hard and who are committed to helping their less fortunate citizens. As an example, in one of our centres, our staff noticed a very young boy with a large and severely infected wound on his leg. The wound had been caused by scolding hot water from a cooking pot in his home. The parents had not sought medical treatment because they are unable to afford it. The child was in agony and the wound was covered with mud and flies. He had been left to his fate and it was obvious that the infection was spreading rapidly.
One Horizon’s staff immediately went into action. The necessary medical intervention was organised within an hour and it involved immediate injections and surgery. After that, daily injections have been scheduled to fight the infection and redressing of the wound is occurring 3 times a day. Supervision of the boys recovery to full health will also be undertaken to ensure that there are no setbacks.
Unfortunately such accidents are common place in the slum and for children the consequences are too often the worst outcome imaginable. Had our staff not acted as swiftly and decisively as they did, the boy's infection would have proven fatal.
Join us in this 1-day program and experience the opportunity to work alongside the people of the community and view life through their eyes — we promise it will leave a rewarding and lasting impression.
