Use Theater to Educate a Community: Volunteer + Adventure

Teach Thai children and communities about important initiatives such as climate change through theater! This is an awesome chance to express your imagination and creativity!

International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) partners with an organization that is working towards a Thai society where all people have access to their own community media to express their struggles and aspirations, and where theater is a popular, effective living cultural practice. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, where you will explore historic and enchanting temples, hill tribe communities, limestone caves and islands and so much more!

This volunteer organization was born in 1980, emerging out of the pro-democracy movement to apply micro media for consciousness-raising as a volunteer-run theater. Today, it operates as a foundation and is recognized as one of Thailand’s major theater groups.

The goals for the volunteer project are to give primary schools in Chiang Dao district the opportunity to strengthen English language literacy through incremental learning, to introduce schools and villages to issues around climate change and environmental action, to develop performance and creative art/learning methodologies and curricula and to become part of long-term environmental and conservation initiatives.

This project has been designed specifically for ISV volunteers as it recognizes the value of the volunteers’ English language resources, responds to the interests in local schools for English-language activities and responds to the relatively high level of environmental/climate change consciousness in Western countries and the need for concerted action in Thailand.

What to Expect?

Volunteer Project:
Volunteers will initially undertake a one-day workshop at the theater as an induction to specific content, Chiang Dao context and appropriate community engagement. You will then have two days to devise a simple theater activity module for the schools, which will include a storytelling performances (singing, puppetry, mask, etc.) using recycled materials, warm up and language games, English vocabulary action songs and book reading activities and creative arts and crafts exercises.

You will have full support from the theater staff. The volunteer project will then run in four primary schools over four weekdays, traveling by bicycle in convoys with materials carried in backpacks. The final weekend will involve a community event with hill tribe village communities using an adapted module, mixed with learning community performance, craft, farming, etc and an overnight home stay. Working conditions will be relatively comfortable, although challenging in terms of developing and facilitating engaging, effective activities.

Adventure Tour:
On the Adventure Tour, participants will travel throughout Thailand’s northern and southern regions, exploring the cultural capital of the North in Chiang Mai, historic and enchanting temples, hill tribe communities, primary forests, wild rivers, limestone caves and islands, stunning beaches, an elephant sanctuary and national parks.

The tour includes a minimum of five activities which may include snorkeling the tropical waters around Koh Phi Phi, rock climbing and rappelling at Tam Mae On in Chiang Mai, Thai cultural dinner and dance performance, Northern overnight hill-tribe trek and 2 day sea kayaking in Ao Phang Nga.

There is also an opportunity for an additional, one-week excursion in Cambodia.
