Saving Turtles in Hawaii

Green sea turtles (called honu locally) are found in the nearshore waters of the Hawai'ian Islands. Predominantly nesting in the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, green turtles can be found off Maui's shallow waters, and basking in large numbers on specific beaches on the island's popular north shore. Basking is a rare behavior in which green sea turtles crawl ashore for reasons other than nesting.

In collaboration with local partner groups, travellers can directly support NGO-directed intiatives. These adventures offer a mix of natural history excursions with several days volunteering to help field biologists with wildlife monitoring and to assist community leaders with a variety of field tasks. Experiences provide an opportunity to help threatened wildlife and further efforts towards ecological health and sustainability.

You'll collect data on occurrence and distribution, and note any other details such as tags or injuries. Another important objective is to educate the public about green turtles at the basking beach site and to introduce proper observation policies  to avoid disturbance.

You'll have time for coral reef snorkeling in Maui's clear waters, for bird watching, and for exploring historical towns such as Lahaina and Pa'ia. February is the peak of the season when humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters to mate and calve, and there will be free time to enjoy a whale watching excursion.

This volunteer expedition is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to conservation science, help protect green sea turtles at Maui's Ho'okipa Beach, and help restore a traditional Maui taro farm in Kahakuloa Valley. We frequent Maui's best beaches, and have the rare opportunity to experience untouristed Maui. You'll help Hawai'i's marine life and immerse yourself in island life and culture, all while making a positive change. No prior experience is necessary to participate, and the only helpful skill is a "can do" attitude.

Expect 6 day costs to be in/around $1200 USD (may vary with currency fluctuation), which helps to cover your accommodation, most meals, local transportation, training and guides.

Gray Whale and Sea Turtle Conservation Adventure

Experience the wonder of the gray whales, on this 5-day expedition in scenic Magdalena Bay on the Pacific coast of the Baja California peninsula where they come to mate and give birth to their calves before returning north towards the Bering Sea. You will also take part in a sea turtle conservation project recognized around the world as a model for community based conservation. From your secluded base camp on a tiny shell island, learn about the importance of the green sea turtle's survival and the role local fishermen play in the species' recovery, before heading out in pangas to capture and release turtles after recording vital data.

This trip supports research on black sea turtles as part of the Grupo Tortuguero program. This information provides vital data on health, migration patterns and habitat use of sea turtles in Magdalena Bay, ultimately providing policymakers and authorities with the tools they need to make strategic decisions towards the species' conservation.

Travelers also play an important role in conserving Magdalena Bay's natural resources, providing a complementary, sustainable source of employment in a zone plagued by overfishing and poaching. Your hosts on this trip are part of a rigorous training and business incubation program which instills community members with principles of social equity and environmental and community stewardship. This is complemented and strengthened by the genuine personal interaction between clients and staff.

Help Create Sustainable Change in Kenya

A One Horizon program in Kenya will expose you to a different way of life. In our 7-day itinerary, you will be visiting 5 centres in and around Nairobi. These centres range from an infants’ crèche and primary schools in the slums of Kibera and Kwangware, to a refuge and retraining centre for HIV-affected women in Ngong Hills.

The founders of One Horizon believe that people with the will can make a difference to the lives of less fortunate communities and individuals. The founders’ conviction that tangible, sustainable and immediate improvements in people’s lives could be achieved through awareness, focus and resources is what drove them to establish One Horizon and it has been a remarkable success with an awe-inspiring list of achievements.

One Horizon enables everyone to contribute something back to the global community. This means more than charitable cash donations. One Horizon enables you to give of yourself whilst experiencing the lives of people perhaps less fortunate.

We spend 100% of your volunteer fees implementing our projects which includes expenditure such as feeding programs, clean water provision, education and school equipment and housing, etc.

Come and see how your contributions are making a real difference to people’s lives. We couldn’t feed children and help people have a brighter future without your support. Come and see for yourself and become part of the One Horizon family.

Volunteer with Children in Kenya

In this 1-day program, you will be visiting a primary school in east Africa’s largest slum, Kibera.  Kibera is found in the centre of Nairobi and is home to half a million people. Here you can become involved helping cook lunch for the children, in assisting with our health checks and in reading to children whose everyday survival is a challenge.

Our Feeding Projects, for instance, are crucial to ensure that children in particular have their nutritional needs met. The outcomes we strive for are children who are healthy, who have good concentration levels and who are more resistant to childhood illnesses. Our work in this area is central to every other outcome that we can achieve.

We spend 100% of your volunteer fees implementing our projects which includes expenditure such as feeding programs, clean water provision, education and school euipment and housing, etc.

Come and see how your contributions are making a real difference to people’s lives.  We couldn’t feed children and help people have a brighter future without your support.  Come and see for yourself and become part of the One Horizon family.

Medical & Health Program in Zambia

Love Volunteer’s partner works with several busy clinics and hospitals. The duties assigned to medical volunteers depend on the individual’s interests and expertise. Medical students who take up volunteering on this program gain an invaluable opportunity to increase their medical experience by working in local clinics and hospitals. Many of the clinics are struggling to cope with an HIV epidemic in Zambia. Volunteers assist the medical staff with various duties and responsibilities and this badly needed help with the Zambia Aids crisis contributes directly to improving the population's health in Zambia.

Teaching Program, Tanzania

The vocational school hosts young adults between the ages of 14 and 22 who are unable to pay US$40 per year to attend secondary school. Many of the students come from extremely poor families or are orphans. In the town of Usa River, large numbers of young people risk ending up on the streets and are often drawn into a life of crime. The school not only equips its students with educational skills, but also provides structure and a positive environment in which to acquire positive life skills. Above all, the students, the teachers and the local staff become a family and a support system for each other.

Currently the curriculum includes cooking, sewing, tourism and computer skills. English is compulsory for all students. On graduating from the program, students are helped by local staff to find jobs in their chosen field.

Each year the vocational school receives over 200 applications from young adults from the community. With limited resources, only 30 students can be admitted per year. A selection process takes place, taking into account written essays, elementary school grades, interviews, needs and levels of commitment shown by the potential student.

Volunteers in Tanzania are required who can teach valuable skills that will enable these young people to find jobs. In particular, we desperately need computer and language teachers. No prior teaching experience is necessary. The class structure and content to be taught are very flexible. Volunteers in Tanzania are encouraged to discuss teaching plans and their methodology with local staff upon arrival.
