Sports Coaching and Youth Development in Cochabamba, Bolivia

Choose a sports coaching project with a difference and come and work with Kaya to help develop sporting skills for underprivileged children in Bolivia. Working within the realm of care, education and recreation, this project provides support to over 230 street children of mixed gender from the ages of 4 to 12 years.

The project includes work with sports, regular education and nutritional advice. The centre gives support for the children not only with the activities they provide, but also with the transfer of the children to the project site. A member of staff from the project goes to collect the children with a bus so they can be transferred at least twice a week with a return transfer to their homes afterwards. At present, the project currently spans an area of 1,600 meters which houses the children.

In the mornings the children study while the afternoons are dedicated to spending time with helpers where they receive their lunch, carry out their homework assignments and play soccer. The children who visit the centre in the mornings also receive their breakfast and get involved with some sporting activities. While there is a number of staff on site, the project is poorly understaffed and enthusiastic volunteers are needed to help coach sports, engage the children with their school work and help to provide an exciting and caring environment for the children to prosper.

The project has recently started an outreach programme to rural communities where they have provided up to 320 families and children with a better future. The ultimate goal of this project is to improve the quality of life for families and children providing them with multiple classrooms for education and many resources for soccer, volleyball and basketball training.

What to Expect?

As a volunteer your main role will be to help out with sports activities as well as helping with children’s homework as the centre also provides the children with a mainstream education. The sports which are actively encouraged include soccer, volleyball and basketball however if you have experience in another area, please do let us know as the children would love to learn new sports! The centre provides children with a once in a lifetime opportunity to win a scholarship where they can travel to Italy to receive international support however this is only available for the most talented players.

We are looking for volunteers to help unlock each child’s potential not only to help their healthy development, but also to increase their future prospects.
