Provide aid to villages in need in the Dominican Republic: Volunteer + Adventure

Join ISV and help uplift and educate children and their families, bringing dignity, love, joy and hope. Work in response to the infrastructural and educational needs in under-developed Dominican villages.

International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) invites you to help out in the overall maintenance and improvements of communities and the basic education of underprivileged children in the beautiful Caribbean. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, which includes waterfall rappelling in the Dominican Alps, windsurfing lessons, snorkeling on the North Coast and so much more!

In order to respond to the obvious infrastructural and educational needs in under-developed Dominican villages in the Northern Jamao region, a non-profit organization was founded in 2004. They have been incredibly involved with the improvement of many surrounding village infrastructures, which include building a full blown local community center complete with kindergarten, preschool and library. They have also renovated, built and refurbished many houses in the poorer areas. In addition, the organization has devised educational and recreational programs within the community center, which continue to impact and improve the daily lives of the local Dominican families.

ISV has now been working with this organization for five years. ISV works directly with local communities and leaders to identify needs and develop volunteer projects that provide the most aid. Volunteers are provided with the opportunity to live and work alongside the communities. The organization has the long-term hope that ISV volunteers will walk away from the project with a greater understanding and appreciation for not only the lives of the Dominican people, but of their worlds back home.

What to Expect?

Volunteer Project:
As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work and live with other volunteers from all over the world, which teaches compromise, flexibility, acceptance, tolerance, and teamwork. Expect to split your time between construction work and working with the school children. Projects will include light construction involving mixing of cement, light lifting, painting and hammering (a construction expert will lead you in construction in conjunction with ISV Project Leaders). The project will involve moderately strenuous to strenuous volunteer work, however, no experience in construction, carpentry, etc. is necessary. You will also be involved in the ISV Health Education Program (HEP) which involves teaching health, hygiene, nutrition, English, math, physical education and arts and crafts to kids between the ages of 5 and 12.

Adventure Tour:
On the Adventure Tour, you will travel throughout the Dominican Republic, exploring the limestone caves, coral reefs, lush canyons and rivers, breathtaking beaches and laid-back beachside lifestyles on the North Coast and Southwest regions, in contrast with the historic cultural richness of the Nation's capital, Santo Domingo. ISV includes a minimum of five activities in the program price to make your experience unforgettable. Activities are subject to change but may include activities such as waterfall rappelling in the Dominican Alps, windsurfing lessons and snorkeling, a historical and cultural tour of the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, caving in Hato Mayor and horseback riding to the secluded Limon waterfall.
