Help a Wildlife Rescue (from trafficking) Centre in Sulawesi
Volunteer in Indonesia and help care for orangutans, sun bears, monkeys, crocodiles, and a wide range of birds at this wildlife rescue centre in Indonesia. The project is located on the island of Sulawesi which, being the closest Indonesian island to the Philippines, is a common consolidation point for illegal shipments of animals being trafficked from Java, Sumatra, and Borneo across to the Philippines and onwards to China, Taiwan, and Japan.
Marine Conservation on the Island of Koh Tao
Based on the Thai island of Koh Tao, this marine conservation project is perfect for divers or those wishing to learn to dive. The local community of Koh Tao, in association with the best dive schools, developed a project to help and protect the coral reefs within the Koh Tao national park from the damage caused by tourism and global warming. Building artificial reefs, culturing a giant clam nursery and undertaking regular monitoring activities in the waters surrounding the island, volunteers can spend every day diving and familiarising themselves with the marine life of Thailand.
Elephant Welfare and Community Development in Thailand
Based in Thailand’s Eastern province of Surin, this project works with the communities that have lived and worked with elephants for hundreds of years. Since the country’s ban on logging and prevalence of machinery, work for elephants is limited and with no other opportunities, the people of these communities and their elephants often starve. The government has developed initiatives that aim to encourage communities to use elephants to help attract tourists to the area.
Philippines: Improve the Future of Abused Women
Domestic abuse, sexual crime and abandonment are unfortunately common in the Philippines and can often leave many women feeling alone and vulnerable. As a result a safe haven for women filing cases against their former partners or who have been left without financial or emotional support was created to protect and care for them. In this centre, women live a communal lifestyle (sometimes with their children) whilst social workers assess them and process their cases, and at the same time the centre teaches them techniques to help empower their lives.
Cambodia Community Compassion
Cambodia is one of the most fascinating countries in Southeast Asia. Following years of war and genocide, Cambodia is now a very safe place to visit, and most importantly, extremely needy. The Angkor Wat temple complex is an enormous tourist draw and the city of Siem Reap is seeing more visitors than ever. Unfortunately, most Cambodians are not reaping the benefits of the blossoming tourism industry, and a large percentage of people still live in abject poverty.
