Phillippines Typhoon Response

Become a disaster volunteer, helping devastated Tacloban residents and communities to rebuild their lives on an operation dedicated to Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Relief and Recovery in the Philippines. At Kaya, we have been working in Tacloban for 5 years and although everyone is safe, the city has been destroyed. Essential work is needed both immediately in the form of emergency relief and in the long term through sustained recovery. Kaya is helping through fundraising and coordinating volunteer assistance in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda). This will not be a traditional program, but instead an aid operation, that needs driven, tough volunteers for assistance.

Activities on this project will initially focus on rebuilding and clearance to provide homes and structures that protect the people from further storms, as well as education and healthcare support. The project is located on the island of Leyte, about an hour by air southeast of Manila. Program Fees cover accommodation, meals, transfers and a small contribution in support of the program costs.

What to Expect?

The project is located in Tacloban City, on the island of Leyte, about an hour by air southeast of Manila. At the moment the city is without electricity, internet and phone lines. Some mobile connection is returning sporadically and communications out from Tacloban will likely remain difficult. Your accommodation will be space on the floor of Kaya’s offices. Toilets and running water are available and an on-site kitchen will provide food.

The financial relief efforts around the world have been amazing and now practical, organised help is needed from experts and non-experts to help rebuild the communities and lives of those living in Tacloban. Extra pairs of hands are required to help with rebuilding, as well as the many nutrition, health and education programmes that will be needed in Leyte province. Volunteers are not only needed right now, but also in the long term to help with the mammoth task of providing futures for these incredibly vulnerable communities.
