Medical Outreach in Rural Madagascar

The rural communities of South East Madagascar have a serious need of medical assistance, from basic education on how to care for small wounds, to more major issues such as assistance with pre and post natal care, burn victims (from open fire ovens) and illnesses such as malaria and HIV. There is a huge need for medical assistance in the local clinic and through outreach work. We welcome qualified medical practitioners, medical students, nutritionists, and general volunteers to assist with all aspects of the work.

Travellers live and work in in a character filled Malagasy village during the weekends, and are transported back to the main town of Fort Dauphin on weekends to rest and recuperate.

What to Expect?

This is a challenging, but highly rewarding community initiatives based in Fort Dauphin, in the South East of Madagascar. The peninsular on which Fort Dauphin is set is flanked either side by sweeping sandy beaches with good surfing. There are high mountains to the North with Pique St Louis overlooking the town. Most amenities are accessible and there is generally good internet access. There are a few quaint local restaurants to choose from, including a beach bar and a vibey and thriving market.

There are two key in-destination benefits to this program:

Rural Medical Outreach:
Travellers make a lasting impact on the accessibility of health care in a community with very little medical support. This includes basic to more complicated procedures, depending on the skills of the practitioner.

Community Health Awareness
: Assist with raising awareness of simple practices to improve a healthy lifestyle and prevent the spread of infection and disease. This project extends to the education of community members on topics such as healthy nutrition and the establishment of vegetable gardens, post natal care and how modify cooking methods to reduce burn injuries.
