Help Conserve the Unique New Zealand Ecosystem: Volunteer + Adventure

Work with the Maori people to protect the natural resources in New Zealand, which is of great importance to their traditional culture.

International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) invites you to help out in the overall maintenance and regeneration of the fragile ecosystems in northern New Zealand. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, which includes black water rafting in underground caves, Kiwi Encounter experience, grade five white water rafting and so much more!

New Zealand has a very diverse landscape and unique flora and fauna, with up to 80% of native trees, flowers and ferns endemic to the country; the plants and animals found in New Zealand evolved in isolation for millions of years but have now been slowly degrading. Conservation issues in New Zealand tend to relate to loss of biodiversity (including extinction), habitat loss, and water quality issues. The clearing of land for human settlement and the introduction of exotic plants have also destroyed the habitats of many native species. This gives conservation of New Zealand’s biodiversity international importance. New Zealand is at the forefront of restoring damaged habitat by reintroducing native animals and original native flora after removing animal pests. This ecological restoration has become a blueprint for the United States and other countries around the world.

What to Expect?

Volunteer Project:
Your volunteer goals will include: planting native species using mainly first generation species, ground preparation, maintenance of revegetation sites and weed control, track maintenance and construction, assisting people to access natural or sensitive sites and monitoring to find out the health of the ecosystem. Tasks you will be involved with may include: planting trees, species monitoring, plant release and clearing land for planting, maintaining tracks and plant propagation. Working conditions for the project range from easy to moderately strenuous and will involve mostly outdoor work. As an example, you could be digging for up to 4-5 hours a day, sometimes on steep, muddy slopes. A moderate fitness level is more than adequate.

Adventure Tour:
On the Adventure Tour, you will explore the rich, diverse landscapes and cityscapes of New Zealand! You will travel along the Southern Alps, climb your way up glaciers, discover primary forests, run wild rivers, explore limestone caves, bathe in geothermal areas, tour national parks and get lost in nightlife of the nation’s capital city, Wellington. ISV includes a minimum of five activities in the program price to make your experience unforgettable. Activities are subject to change but may include black water rafting in underground caves, grade five white water rafting, Kiwi encounter experience, a guided tour through Te Papa National Museum and an exploration of the thermal wonders of Rotorua via Hell’s Gate Thermal Reserve.

There is also an opportunity for an additional, one-week excursion in Fiji.
