Educate Children Through Dance and Music: Volunteer + Adventure

Children are the heartbeat of Costa Rican communities and this volunteer program allows local children and volunteers to explore, learn, and have fun through theatre, music and dance. Make a meaningful difference!

International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) offers you the chance to engage, educate and inspire children and help them reach their potential within their local communities. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, where you go snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean, whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River, trek through several ecological reserves and so much more!

The Costa Rican organization we work with was established in 2006 by two locals as a way of giving arts a social function. By combining theater, art and environmental conservation concerns, this organization has created street performances, workshops and expositions using mostly recycled or reusable materials. The organization believes human expression, in any art form, gives people a way to increase their quality of life and to experience freedom and fun, as this is the most effective way to raise awareness among future generations concerning environmental conservation. The project’s local success and national impact rests on the communities’ ability to experience what they never have encountered before. It creates a different means of learning and gives children and adults a chance to meet people from other cultures by assisting communities to achieve a healthier and more comprehensive way of living.

ISV volunteers have been working on this project since 2009; the collaboration has been very successful and the organization has realized the importance for children and families of rural communities to share experiences with people from other countries. ISV volunteers enabled the unification of communities and further awareness for the environment. Past accomplishments include: 10 street parade performances, making 410 masks, making 430 instruments from disposable materials, making 200 street signs, making 20 recyclable garbage containers and painting 12 large murals and 60 small murals in both community facilities and family homes.

What to Expect?

Volunteer Project:

As a volunteer, you will help communities that are open to sustainable tourism to bring in more income, without losing their identity. Volunteers will take part in a tour around the town to identify key places to make signs in English and Spanish for tourists, make the signs, work with the kids to make a sign with the name of every family in the town, and paint murals in an artistic way. Volunteers will have an active role in the decisions of where to place signs and what information they should have since they are tourists too.

Be prepared to paint and work and be surrounded by children. These activities will provide an extended and creative way to increase children’s skills, values and basic understanding of concepts such as recycling, water-use, conservation, friendship, respect, motivation and self-confidence. Volunteers will creatively use recycled materials to produce instruments, rhythms and dances, teaching along the way. You may also take part in teaching English classes and sports, assist local schools, organize river and beach clean-ups and reforestation efforts, help the elderly with farming tasks, plant trees, help out in locally owned plant nurseries, trail building, maintenance and construction. Art project enthusiasm, positive attitude and great energy are very important for this project!

Adventure Tour:
On the Adventure Tour, participants will travel throughout Costa Rica including the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, discovering primary rainforests, plentiful varieties of wildlife, volcanic landscapes, cloud forests, reefs, national parks, and private reserves while staying in some of the best eco-lodges in the country. You will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean, whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River, treks through several ecological reserves, jungle kayaking in the canals of Tortuguero National Park, zip-lining and rappelling in La Fortuna, observing two of Costa Rica’s many volcanoes, tubing on the Negro River, getting personalized surfing instruction in Samara, and exploring the local nightlife in Heredia. Explore and experience the natural wonders in the jewel of Central America!

There are also additional packages available for adventures in Machu Picchu/Peru, Galapagos, and Spanish Language courses.
