Monitoring nesting sea turtles and hatchlings on Carriacou, a tiny island of the Grenadines Archipelago, Caribbean Sea

The close encounter with sea turtles is an amazing experience, like meeting a prehistoric animal. In fact these creatures lived at the same time as dinosaurs, 100 million years ago. They survived the glacial era, yet today they may not survive the destruction of their species and habitat made by humans, unless we actively protect them. Helping mother turtles to nest safely and protecting their nests and hatchlings is essential for their population to survive the odds against them and for maintaining the balance of the marine ecosystem.

Together with other volunteers and local guides you will make a difference not only for sea turtles, but also for the local communities. This project trains and employs guides from the nearby villages and promotes turtle conservation awareness in local schools.

What to Expect?

Carriacou is a 13 sq. miles island where all basic services are available. The Grenadines are reknowned for sailing and diving. You will be hosted at Kido Ecological Station, two and half miles from the main nesting beach, located within the High North Nature Park. Volunteers reach the nesting sites either by walking/hiking or cycling. The longest nesting beach is over half a mile long, to be patrolled for 5 nights a week, from 8pm to 5.30 am.

Early morning patrolling of other beaches may be conducted by kayak from Kido bay. Walking on soft sand all night, with a few minutes to rest in between each run, requires physical fitness and stamina. Tiredness builds up, especially in the first few days, yet the excitement of spotting a nesting turtle, recording the egg laying process and finding newborn turtles crawling out of their shells is extremely rewarding. During your weekly two-day rest you may explore Carriacou, her hiking trails, snorkel and dive in the clear waters of the Grenadines or visit offshore cays and yes!, even swim along foraging sea turtles.
