Make a difference working with children in Cape Town, by giving them a sense of belonging through dance, drama, sports and arts.
International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) offers you the chance to volunteer with children, helping them with English language skills, homework and after school activities like arts and crafts, dance and sports. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, where you’ll enjoy wildlife safaris, river cruises alongside hippos and crocs and partake in the most spectacular adventure activities in South Africa!
Langa is one of the oldest townships in Cape Town and is steeped in history. The two founders of this project are both residents of Langa and saw a need to prevent young people from moving into a life of crime because of boredom. They help the youth identify more with their culture through dance and music. Programs available are gumboots dance, traditional music, traditional instruments, drama and sports. The goals of this project are to build self-esteem and confidence, give guidance, teach life skills and teamwork, take kids off the streets, motivate youth to have respect and discipline, install positive attitudes to ex-convicts and teenage mothers, and involving physically disabled children. By entertaining and giving focus to these young people, they are helping to provide a sense of purpose and pride, to help them grow into mature adults.
What to Expect?
On your Volunteer Project the main focus will be working with children in their after-school care program. The main tasks will involve helping the children with their homework, participating in the dance/music workshops, helping encourage the children to practice their English speaking skills, arts and crafts, local outings and sports/games activities.
Other tasks you may be involved in within the community during school hours may include community garden work, assisting with feeding programs for disadvantaged people, assistant teaching in local schools and working in local kindergartens and pre-schools. If you have a particular set of skills like teaching, health education, drama or sports coaching, your skills can be taken into account and lessons can be customized. You will have two free days during your project during which you can participate in many of the activities available around Cape Town from wine tours, a visit to Robben Island or a trip up Table Mountain.
On the Adventure Tour, you will explore the natural and cultural wonders in South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. ISV’s tour is like no other, and includes a host of activities that will leave you breathless. Swim with whale sharks and manta rays in the warm waters of Mozambique before exploring its culturally rich capital, Maputo. Experience the thrill of horseback riding or mountain biking through game reserves as you observe wild animals right next to you. Visit an elephant and monkey sanctuary and feel the rhythm of Africa with native drumming and dance lessons.
There is also an additional excursion available to extend your adventure to Botswana and Zambia.
