Home and Community Building Projects in Africa

Volunteer in Swaziland to help to build family homes for needy families using local building materials and techniques. Work as a volunteer with local builders in one of Africa's last remaining Monarchies where HIV and AIDS is decimating rural communities, leaving many orphaned children with inadequate shelters.

The Building Project aims to assist these vulnerable children through building basic shelters, gardens, water systems and other physical structures needed at households and care centres. At the same time you will be transferring skills, providing basic accommodation and will be helping to give communities encouragement and motivation to improve the quality of life. The project uses locally sourced building materials where possible and local methods. We construct mud bricks using a locally made compressor and use other local materials wherever possible.

This project caters to volunteers wanting to make a difference but also to groups who want to be involved in larger scale building projects.

What to Expect?

As a volunteer on the build a future program you will be in the communities, building classrooms and houses for orphaned and vulnerable children, fixing existing households that need to be fixed and painting with the aim of giving a good shelter for these children and a suitable schooling environment. You may also help to start up gardens in the homesteads and develop existing ones.

You will use local techniques of making mud bricks, then lay foundations, complete plastering, flooring, windows, doors and roofing under the supervision and direction of a local builder. Once completed, you will then have the opportunity to help decorate the structure! You will also get to meet local community members and provide support to needy families and children while working on the building.

As a volunteer you may get involved in many of the following activities depending on the timing of your placement:
