CRIS volunteers assist people with disabilities to explore places they would otherwise not be able to access; through experiencing the wonders of the natural world, they conquer doubts to move beyond self and societal expectations. Volunteers with CRIS improve community inclusion and help people with disabilities to improve their quality of life and well being while creating lasting friendships and memories.
The gratification of helping others cannot be described in words but that indescribable feeling is what you will find during your time with CRIS. We are a family of fun loving and dedicated volunteers who make nature accessible so we can all experience it together.
What to Expect?
CRIS’s activities include daily outings for people with disabilities through 5 main adaptive activities: hiking, paddling, and cycling in the spring, summer and fall; winter hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the fall and winter. The daily group activities generally occur at 10 am and 1pm Monday to Friday and are 2-3 hours in duration for groups of 2-10 people total. Adaptive Wilderness Adventures (AWA) is another division of the CRIS organization which encompasses our more intense activities which are longer in duration like adaptive rock climbing and multiday wilderness adventures.
All of our activities utilize various pieces of adaptive equipment from the revolutionary TrailRider to recumbent tandem cycles and adapted kayaks. We provide training with all of our equipment and for all of our activities but relevant skills are an asset. We also look for skilled volunteers to assist in many areas of operation including: Administrative duties (filing, database input, etc); Fundraising; Equipment repairs and maintenance (bikes, kayaks, TrailRiders etc.).
