Help Conserve Habitats Home to Penguins and Koalas: Volunteer + Adventure

Work to conserve and enhance habitat areas for flagship species in Australia. Help create a natural habitat to ensure the conservation of penguins, shearwaters and koalas!

International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) invites you to provide essential support for a range of activities from wildlife protection, revegetation, monitoring, heritage conservation and asset protection. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, which includes snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, white water rafting, exploring Fraser Island and so much more!

The park you will be working for was formed in 1996, in order to preserve delicate ecosystems including dunes, mangroves, salt marsh wetlands, woodlands and revegetated areas–all of which provide significant wildlife habitats. This habitat supports significant populations of birds and other wildlife such as Little Penguins, Hooded Plovers, Short-tailed Shearwaters, migratory bird species and mammals such as koalas, wallabies, possums, Australian Fur Seals and bats. The park is a completely self-funded organization with no recurrent government funding so volunteers hold an integral part to the current and future success. The park has hosted ISV groups for the past four years and teams have completed vital projects such as habitat rehabilitation work, weed control and propagation of natives in our nursery.

What to Expect?

Volunteer Project:
As a volunteer, you will focus on four main volunteer projects: propagation of native plants, weed removal, revegetation of habitat areas and penguin habitat rehabilitation. Some of the activities you will be doing will include pulling weeds, painting the stump of cut out weeds with herbicide, planting trees, shrubs, succulents and grasses with tree planters, guarding plants with tree guards and stakes and construction of penguin boxes (artificial burrows/nest boxes that the penguins nest in). The activities are not generally physically difficult and are easily mastered with time and practice; however, a moderate level of fitness is recommended. The working day is generally from 8.30am to 4pm, with smoko (morning tea) and lunch breaks.

Adventure Tour:
On the Adventure Tour, participants will explore the best Australia has to offer from beautiful sand dunes and lush rainforests to the stunning Great Barrier Reef. You will have the adventure excursion of a lifetime as you travel along Australia's beautiful East Coast between Sydney and Cairns, exploring the World Heritage Areas of the Blue Mountains, Fraser Island (the world’s largest sand island), the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics areas, in addition to primary rainforests, wild rivers, pristine beaches and various cultural attractions.

There is also an opportunity for an additional, one-week excursion in Fiji.
