In rural Kenya, around 70% of people are living below the poverty line and access to proper sanitation, clean drinking water, healthcare and an education are often limited or non- existent. Based from Camp Kenya’s original camp in the village of Makongeni, this trip gives those in the medical profession a chance to experience caring for people in a new and challenging environment.
Camp Kenya has been working on various projects within Makongeni over the past 9 years, including reconstructing and refurbishing school classrooms and facilities, sports development and several community outreach programmes with women and youth groups. In 2009, Camp Kenya forged a partnership with the Rafiki Kenia Foundation also based in Makongeni, to support various programmes including the improvement of public healthcare facilities.
