Get precious water to farmers in India

In the villages around Bhinder on the outskirts of Udaipur, you can assist our in-country partner, Sahyog Sansthan, in working with subsistence farmers to build water retention structures such as small sub-surface dams, water barriers and well/land partitions. Those structures help hold monsoon waters in riverbeds long enough that it seeps into the ground, recharging wells and boosting aquifers. By providing a water source, you will help these farmers provide for their families and generate an income.

Udaipur is located in one of India’s poorest states, Rajasthan. We encourage volunteers to spend time there, as Udaipur is known as the Venice of India. It is a beautiful lakeside city and one of India’s most romantic and picturesque destinations. Visit Jodphur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer and experience Rajasthan’s fascinating history, evident today by the numerous and impressive forts, palaces and castles that dot the landscape. Witness the stark beauty of the Thar Desert by taking a camel safari.

No trip to India would be complete without visiting Agra to see its Red Fort and one of the world’s seven wonders: the Taj Mahal.

What to Expect?

Developing World Connections offers two-week trips for all ages of volunteers. We work with in-country non-profit organizations and take great care to ensure all volunteers have a safe, fun and rewarding experience. When you sign up to volunteer, you will be with a team of like-minded travellers. Each group is accompanied by a team leader who supports everyone from start to finish. Our team leaders are experienced travellers and former volunteers with a solid understanding of the volunteers’ needs.

Volunteers work side by side with locals on each sustainable project. These water structures have a major community impact and can be completed by teams in a short period of time – a great way to see the fruits of your labour. Never built something before? Don't worry! No training or special skills are required, and you can take breaks whenever necessary.

We take great care to pre-screen your accommodations so they are clean, comfortable, and acceptable by North American standards. Restaurants providing everything from local to Western cuisine are chosen for their high standards in food preparation. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated.
