Conserve Australias Endangered Plants, Animals and Habitats: Volunteer + Adventure

Make a difference and help to restore the important natural ecosystems in Australia. You will work with other volunteers to achieve various conservation goals.

International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) invites you to contribute to tree planting, animal husbandry and habitat restoration. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, which includes snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, white water rafting, exploring a wildlife park and so much more!

Australia has the worst record for native mammal extinctions in the world. More mammals have become extinct in the last 200 years in Australia than anywhere else in the world for the last 500 years. ISV has partnered with a local organization to help with this problem and conserve, preserve and protect Australian native ecosystems. With the assistance of volunteers, this organization has helped to protect nearly 3,000 acres of natural habitat near the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. They have worked hard to remove weed species and feral animals such as foxes, cats, rabbits and wild dogs. These conservation projects are very important, not only on the local scale, but on a national level as well. Many of the species and habitats the organization works with are not effectively managed by anyone else, so ISV participants who come each year, are vital in helping the organization reach their goals.

What to Expect?

Volunteer Project:
Volunteers will take part in a range of activities within the reserves, which are designed to contribute to saving the endangered wildlife through restoration of the habitats that support them. In each season, the goal is to plant about 15,000 native plants while maintaining trees planted by ISV groups in previous years and restoring habitats around several dams and wetlands. On one or two days on project, you may be involved in the wildlife activities at a sanctuary including animal husbandry (cleaning enclosures, feeding animals) and development (trail & enclosure construction). You will be expected to do physical activity that involves digging, lifting and carrying items. A moderate level of fitness is required as some of the activities require participants to walk to project sites, which have varied topography with some steep inclines.

Adventure Tour:
On the Adventure Tour, participants will explore the best Australia has to offer from beautiful sand dunes and lush rainforests to the stunning Great Barrier Reef. You will have the adventure excursion of a lifetime as you travel along Australia's beautiful East Coast between Sydney and Cairns, exploring the World Heritage Areas of the Blue Mountains, Fraser Island (the world’s largest sand island), the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics areas, in addition to primary rainforests, wild rivers, pristine beaches and various cultural attractions.

There is also an opportunity for an additional, one-week excursion in Fiji.

About our organization:
