Combine education and village construction work in the Dominican Republic: Volunteer + Adventure

Make a difference to a community in need! Work on a volunteer project that combines helping with the basic education of underprivileged children and improving village infrastructure.

International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) invites you to help out a local, agricultural community in the Dominican Republic. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, which includes waterfall rappelling in the Dominican Alps, horseback riding, caving in Hato Mayor and so much more!

This project began in 2009 as an ISV initiative addressing the needs of a local community in the Central Mountain Range of the Dominican Republic. This village is comprised of about 200 very underprivileged Haitian/Dominican agricultural worker families. The local strawberry farming and rose production from large companies does not directly benefit the community and virtually nothing is given back to these poor workers who are surviving meagerly. One of the region’s respected leaders joined together with ISV to found the project in order to promote community development and help better the quality of life in the village

This village hosts volunteers on a regular basis and this is ISV’s third year working on project. ISV volunteers have helped with many of the village needs; they have built 8 meter deep latrines, in order to improve hygiene and sanitation, improved the water quality of the local watershed and have touched the lives of 50+ local children by teaching English, math and natural sciences, arts and crafts and physical education. The presence of ISV volunteers is an important force in helping the village complete these important community development projects and to motivate local inhabitants to break through the cycle of poverty.

What to Expect?

Volunteer Project:
Tasks for volunteers are selected by a committee formed by community leaders and an ISV representative, so you will be involved in tasks that are most urgent for the community. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to address several community needs with two main focuses: education and village infrastructure. The education component involves the ISV Health Education Program. You will help educate the children of the village in the areas of hygiene, safety, nutrition, social awareness and etiquette, and to share your differing cultural backgrounds. You will be able to draw on the collective and individual skills of your ISV project groups. For the construction component, you will continue to expand the local village infrastructure by building latrines and putting in cement floors in several houses of the village, to prevent health problems in children from dirt floors.

Adventure Tour:
On the Adventure Tour, you will travel throughout the Dominican Republic, exploring the limestone caves, coral reefs, lush canyons and rivers, breathtaking beaches and laid-back beachside lifestyles on the North Coast and Southwest regions, in contrast with the historic cultural richness of the Nation's capital, Santo Domingo. ISV includes a minimum of five activities in the program price to make your experience unforgettable. Activities are subject to change but may include activities such as waterfall rappelling in the Dominican Alps, windsurfing lessons and snorkeling, a historical and cultural tour of the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, caving in Hato Mayor and horseback riding to the secluded Limon waterfall.
