Child Care, Teaching and Sport in Nepal

Volunteers are needed to help the PoD Nepal team to help to improve the quality of life and opportunities for disadvantaged children in the beautiful Himalayan mountain city of Pokhara. You can contribute by volunteering on a range of fantastic child care, teaching and sports placements in Pokhara including:

City and Village Schools

Day care centre for local children

Street Kid’s centre

Nursery

Volunteering in Nepal will open your eyes to a new culture and a very different life to that back home. Many volunteers describe their time working with children in Nepal as 'life changing'.

This is your chance to work with some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in the world. Volunteers can choose to stay at one child care placement throughout their time in Nepal or arrange to volunteer at a range of the placements. For example it is possible to spend mornings at a day care centre or nursery class then volunteer at the Street Kid’s centre in the late afternoon. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with a range of children and placements. All PoD Nepal Volunteers can also join our Friday volunteering group where PoD organises for a team to volunteer at an orphanage in Pokhara.

What to Expect?

Volunteers can act as a big sister or big brother and be a role model to the children and provide friendship and support. The interaction with foreign volunteers will naturally improve the children’s English but will also improve the children’s confidence.

PoD Nepal works with three schools in Pokhara and two schools in the village of Bhalam. Volunteers who teach and live in Bhalam will be able to experience traditional Nepal in a beautiful rural setting while volunteers in Pokhara will be based in the exciting and bustling yet laid back city.

All our schools provide volunteers with a rewarding experience and the pupils benefit greatly from teaching volunteers.

Testimonials

“I had a wonderful two weeks in Pokhara, Nepal volunteering with PoD and would highly recommend it to anyone. You really get to see the benefit of the work you do and bringing happiness and smiles to the children you work with is so rewarding. Chrissy and Phil are a fantastic support and Bindu and her family make you feel so welcome at her house, I really didn't want to leave! Overall it was a wonderful experience and I'm so glad I volunteered with PoD. The staff at the UK office were also fantastic, Gemma gave me so much support and answered all of my questions. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Describe your typical day: There is no typical day really, which is what I really enjoyed. Each day is different! Some days I would be helping the children with their alphabet and numbers, other days we would be learning about animals and colours, practicing handwriting or singing nursery rhymes! What did you find most rewarding? I found getting to know the children really rewarding and it was lovely helping them to learn by assisting with class activities. It was also great to interact with the children during playtime and share in their energy and enthusiasm! What did you find most challenging? I would say that perhaps the language barrier could be challenging sometimes when trying to communicate with the children but you find a way around and the language lesson that is included at the start of the placement is very useful. What advice would you give others considering doing this placement? Always have an open mind and be flexible. Have fun and enjoy it. You only get out as much as you put in, so prepare activities and come with ideas of what you can contribute. Why do you think others should volunteer abroad? Volunteering abroad is a great way of experiencing a different culture. You get to interact with local people directly and you make a positive impact on a community at the same time, which is a really rewarding feeling. You also get to meet lots of lovely people and will leave with lasting memories. Why did you choose PoD? I chose PoD because I really liked everything I read on the website. Everything was so well organised, and the help and support you get from the start with PoD continues throughout your volunteering journey. I felt really secure and comfortable knowing I was in such safe hands. Would you recommend PoD to your friends? Yes”
