This project enables you to bring your strengths to the project and utilize them helping children who live very impoverished lives. Most volunteers find that they leave a piece of their heart at CCPP and take home more memories than can be held in their heart. While our core activity is painting, which we do everyday, there is so much more going on at CCPP on a daily basis. We are a registered English school with classes held daily. We have days filled with activities in a safe environment.
In a country where even the youngest has to do his part you are entitled to see a side of the children that is enchanting. You may find yourself playing, reading, running a craft or sports activity, holding a skipping rope, or just giving encouragement to the kids. We always need assistance with our English classes and specific projects around the centre. There is nothing like a room full of children thanking the volunteers for their time spent with them. You also will make some lifetime friends in the staff and volunteers that you share your time with at the center. It is a life changing experience that no one soon forgets.
What to Expect?
So what’s it like? Volunteering at CCPP can be a wonderfully rewarding experience, but you need to be ready for the realities of working in a third world country. Although Sihanoukville is quite advanced compared to a lot of Cambodia, the poverty and possible culture shock you may experience may affect your time here. We will be emailing general information about what life is like as a volunteer.
Any questions you have please feel free to forward them to us and we will answer them as quickly and honestly as possible. What hours will I be working? The center is open 8am till 7pm and our gallery is 11 am to 7pm. Depending on how many volunteers we have we split the shifts into half days. You could work half days or a mix of half days and full days. We have one day off a week, being Sundays .You will have time to visit the beach and enjoy the town. Our kids are all from impoverished backgrounds, and a lot have suffered abuse. Most have no parental guidance and live without rules or structure. However, these children are respectful, appreciative, and loving. Volunteers truly enjoy their time with these children.
CCPP provides excellent volunteer accommodation, and as an added bonus we are situated just 500 meters from the beach. There are 5 bedrooms in all, with 3 clean shared bathrooms, and we have full kitchen facilities, a TV room, communal balcony and a washer for laundry. Cambodians dress modestly and we ask that you remember to keep modestly covered when around the kids and when visiting the beach they frequent. It’s all about respect. Also, there is absolutely no drugs or alcohol in the volunteer housing.
We ask that you represent this project with utmost consideration for this community and our children. We do ask that volunteers refrain for partaking in the nightlife while working with CCPP, this is what we exist to combat the effects of, the tourist trade. Sihanoukville is a beach destination and has it share of problems associated with the tourist trade that comes with the back packers. As a group CCPP volunteers are generally respectful of the culture. We do ask volunteers to sign a code of conduct when they arrive. There is a lot of great restaurants and a number of things to do in Sihanoukville. Most nights all the volunteers go out for supper as a group.
