Work alongside local teachers in a preschool in Cape Town. Make a meaningful difference and give a child the individual attention they deserve.
International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) offers you the chance to assist teachers and contribute to providing children with a better education. After giving back, you will then reward yourself by participating in an incredible two week adventure tour, which will include river cruises alongside hippos and crocs, rappelling down mountains, horseback riding through wildlife parks, a tour of a national park and so much more!
The preschool teaching and education project has been running since 2008, where ISV volunteers have been working closely with two preschools in the area. Your volunteering mission is to contribute to child development and the community through assistant teaching at local schools in the underprivileged communities on the outskirts of Cape Town. The area is inhabited by Xhosa speaking African people, Afrikaans speaking people and a few refugees from various African countries. They have a tight community spirit and are genuinely friendly and welcoming.
Children in preschools have a severe lack of facilities and are taught from containers that have been brought into the community as donations. You will find that most of the schools have meager and ill-equipped facilities, but a wealth of children with a desire to learn. As a volunteer, you will assist teachers and contribute to our effort of providing children with a better education. In addition, you will have the opportunity to organize your own classes, using your creativity and unique interests.
What to Expect?
As an ISV Volunteer, you will provide individual attention and assistance to children during lessons, help with crafts, painting, reading and games, organize special needs classes and help give the children their meals. You may also be asked to help clean, maintain and even refurbish the classrooms, most of which are quite run down. In the mornings, you will be working at the school, and in the afternoons, you will be working on a community project, which could include playing with children, coaching, or building and painting classrooms. Evenings and weekends are free time for volunteers. Most volunteers enjoy going to the beach or spending the evening at a local night spot.
On the Adventure Tour, you will explore the natural and cultural wonders in South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. ISV’s tour is like no other, and includes a host of activities that will leave you breathless. Swim with whale sharks and manta rays in the warm waters of Mozambique before exploring its culturally rich capital, Maputo. Experience the thrill of horseback riding or mountain biking through game reserves as you observe wild animals right next to you. Visit an elephant and monkey sanctuary and feel the rhythm of Africa with native drumming and dance lessons.
There is also an additional excursion available to extend your adventure to Botswana and Zambia.
