Travel to the lively resort town of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, situated on the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, and spend time assisting a unique program designed for special needs children. You will be assisting children and young people with special needs with their different therapies and activities, learning about horse therapy, as well as music and physical therapy.
Your initial days on the project will be taken up with some basic training prior to carrying out any activities with the children. Depending on the duration of your stay, you will be working around five hours a day Monday to Saturday, assisting the staff of the horse therapy center in echinotherapy a couple of times a week, as well as physical and musical therapy in different venues around Playa del Carmen. The rest of the day will be spent preparing the following day’s activities, preparing resources, taking Spanish lessons or enjoying a well-deserved break if all the above has been completed! Typical daily tasks can include entertaining and play with the children; preparing and cleaning the school; assisting local staff to prepare teaching material and resources; teaching basic education concepts to some of the children; assisting in musical and physical therapy; and, preparing and walking the horses. If you have the required skills and you are staying for a longer duration (minimum 8 weeks), you will also learn how to conduct horse and physical therapy. Working with children can be physically and emotionally demanding, however, it is very rewarding and the project achieves a good balance between volunteer work activities and downtime.
