Agro-Ecology Project in Costa Rica

Volunteers live and work on an agro-ecological farm and are involved in many different aspects of a self-sufficient farm. The work will include construction, feeding the animals, planting seeds, soil conservation, maintenance of medicinal plants, using and producing organic fertilizer, maintaining the spring-water wells, and harvesting crops. The work is at times challenging, but volunteers have found it stimulating and rewarding.

There are several projects on which the volunteers will be working while at the farm. Soil remediation, medicinal herb plot and vegetable garden, terrace construction and maintenance, new cabin construction, worm composting, and maintaining the frog and fish ponds. Although the above projects take priority, there are other tasks in which volunteers can lend a hand, including cutting and chopping wood for the kitchen stove, making natural shampoo and/or insect repellent from herbs, feeding the chickens and ducks, and collecting their eggs. There is even the possibility of milking the cow and making cheese or yoghurt.

Please note that an airport pick-up is not provided for this project.

What to Expect?

Volunteers will stay with the host family in a rustic cabin. There are four rooms set aside for the volunteers, with two bunk beds in each. The cabin is generally well-equipped, with hot showers and electric power sources in bedrooms.

Your host family will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner. Costa Rican food typically is described as tasty, but mild in comparison to Mexican cuisine. The meals will consist of simple Costa Rican food, and will include a lot of cooked rice and beans. With the large number of guests staying, volunteers will need to help in the kitchen for a day. This will give them a chance to practice their Spanish, learn a bit about typical Tico cuisine, make frescoes, and possibly cook with biogas.

One big advantage that volunteers staying in Costa Rica have over ordinary travellers here is that they gain insight on local customs and the true character of these warm and friendly people.
